Nine years ago tonight, barefoot and oh, so young, I spoke these words in the oil light of an ivy covered chapel on a night that promised snow, and entered a lifelong union. The simplest promises are sometimes the hardest to keep well, but what is love without a lifetime?
I, David Nilsen,
Take you, Lyndie Markley,
To be my wife
As God has first loved me,
So shall I love you
I vow to love you
My whole life through
In obedience to Christ’s
Example of love
Given to us through
The holy scriptures
To be patient with you
As love is long-suffering
To seek your needs above my own
As love is not selfish
To counsel you in righteousness
As love does not rejoice in iniquity
But in truth
To always forgive you
As God faithfully forgives me
To seek and accept your forgiveness
As love is not prideful
To trust you in all things
As we are now one in all things
To remain faithful to you
In times of despair and in times of gladness
In times of poverty and in times of prosperity
In times of many friends and in times of few
To embrace you when others reject you
To praise you when others curse you
To love you when others hate you
To seek you always and in all things
I, David, take you, Lyndie,
To be my wife
